How to Maximize Your Small Living Space

With rising housing costs in the Greater Chicago Area, many renters and homeowners are wondering how they can utilize the space they do have.  Here are some tips we hope you will LOVE:

1. Clean the Clutter

Many of us tend to keep clothing and other items that we never choose to use.  As a result, these items get in the way and collect dust.  We recommend that if you haven’t touched an item in six months, unless it is sentimental like photo albums, to donate it.

2. Storage

After clearing out your clutter, we encourage you to find a home for each item.  To determine a home for an item, ask yourself “Where would I go to find this”?

3. Light

You may not have control over the number of windows that you have in your space, but there are ways to still increase light in your home.  Open your blinds and curtains each day, add more light sources and/or upgrade to smart lighting.

4. Mirrors, Mirrors, Mirrors

Increase the light in your space by adding mirrors to every room that you would like to brighten.  Choose mirrors that fit your personality or visit the local hardware/craft store to jazz up mirrors that you already have but aren’t using.

5. Invisible Furniture

Choose furniture that will compliment your home instead of grab attention.  When focusing on the room instead of the furniture, the room will appear larger.

6. Convertible Spaces

What rooms do you have in your house that can be used for more than one thing?  Can you have a home office with a pull-out couch that can be used for visitors?

7. Colors

Choose light colors to bring emphasize the room instead of the items in the room.  White, light pink and light blue are wonderful options.

8. Wall Art

Create or purchase artwork that shows off the size and space of the room.  If you have a smaller room, ensure that one piece of art doesn’t take up an entire wall.

9. Flooring

The layout (pattern) that flooring can be arranged in can make a room appear larger.  Work through each design configuration to see what works best for you.

10. Go Outdoors

Add a living space outside.  Sunrooms, porches or decks when utilized properly, can make your home feel much larger.
